Florida is a vulnerable state when it comes to natural disasters. With the potential for hurricanes, floods, and even tornadoes and wildfires, it’s important to know ahead of time what to do if your home is affected by Mother Nature’s wrath. Unfortunately, the insurance companies are also prepared for you to call and make a disaster claim.

Before a disaster ever happens, make sure that you know your policy so that you are up to date and prepared when something does happen. It’s not uncommon for the insurance company to not act in good faith, causing your settlement to be delayed.

With the advice listed below, you should be better prepared to start the conversation with the insurance company if your home is damaged by a natural disaster.

1. Call The Insurance Company Immediately

You have an insurance policy in place to help and protect you in case something happens. Use it! Never assume that the issue is not covered or that you can fix the problem yourself. When you call, you will find out how much you will be compensated for and if there is a deductible.

*Note: Never accept what the insurance company offers you as a settlement to your claim or take a denial as the end all be all. You need to make sure that the settlement is enough to restore your house or condo back to the condition that it was in, pre-loss.

2. Prevent Further Loss

Aside from calling your insurance company, take steps to prevent further loss if possible. Make sure to move things out of the way of further damage and salvage anything that you can. It seems obvious, but in a hectic situation, you might not be thinking as clearly. Do this without throwing anything out so that the insurance company can see the damage firsthand.

3. Document Everything

Additional proof is always a good idea. Take pictures and videos of the damaged property and the items that were ruined. Don’t risk your own health to save any items or take pictures, though. Wherever you can, document the damage, but don’t try to fix anything. That will only make it more difficult to get the full settlement.

Having a natural disaster hit your home is never something you want to experience. Living in Florida increases your chances of a natural disaster impacting your home, especially if you’re close to the water. Be prepared by knowing your insurance policy and never making assumptions about what the insurance company can do for you.

If you are affected, call the Glassman Legal Group office at (954) 915-8800 after the insurance provider offers or denies your settlement. We can evaluate your claim and determine if they were correct or not and if you are entitled to a larger settlement.
